Our ancestry dates back to the early settlement years, when the area was all forest - perfect for logging. Dodge Road originally was the roadway to Dodge's Sawmill. At one time, George Fred Carleton, in the 1800s, owned much of Rowley. Between Rowley, Georgetown and Boxford, he owned about 5,000 acres where he and his men would cut timbers for the mill. Hunsley Hills Conservation area in Rowley, Cleveland Farm Conservation Area in Rowley/Boxford and the 140 acres of Herrick Farm remain intact today.

William Hale Herrick II, better known as Bill, inherited the farm from his grandmother, Sophie Dodge, in the 1940s while in his early-twenties. Most men had been drafted, as he was too. When the service found out that he was a farmer, they told him to go back to the farm. They knew back then the importance of agriculture. Bill ran the sawmill and the farm until later on when his son, Chip, took over the mill and Sam took over the farm.

Bill's youngest son, Sam, was a born farmer and naturally took over the farm, working with his dad at every chance starting when he was a very younchild. Bill was from "the old school" and so when Sam build up a dairy herd on his own, he was milking 25 head before and after school by hand during his teenage years. In the 70's, he finally installed electricity, enabling Sam to increase his herd. In the early 80's, they built the current milking barn together. The original red barn was built early in the 1900s. Sam put all his earnings into equipment for the farm, enabling him to continue farming.

Today, we are the 13th generation on this land. Many incredible people before us made this life possible for us today. We are honored to continue the legacy that our ancestors began hundreds of years ago through responsible stewardship and modern-day markets.
